Day by day
- Day1The Golden Temple at night
Check in and rest. In the evening visit Sri Harmandir Sahib, eat at the langar (free community kitchen), and stay for the Palki Sahib ceremony when the Guru Granth Sahib is carried to rest.
- Day2History and the border
Back to the temple early, when it is calm. Walk to Jallianwala Bagh next door and the Partition Museum at the Town Hall. After lunch, go to the Attari–Wagah border for the Beating Retreat ceremony; arrive about two hours before it starts.
- Day3Fort, food and bazaars
Gobindgarh Fort and the Durgiana Temple. Amritsari kulcha and lassi for lunch, then Heritage Street and Hall Bazaar for shopping. Fly home the next morning.
Before you go
- At the Golden Temple cover your head (scarves are given out), take off your shoes and wash your feet. Entry and langar are free.
- Wagah ceremony. Take your passport, little else; bags may not be allowed. Timings change with the season and the border situation, so check locally on the day.
- Winter fog in December and January can delay flights into north India. Leave spare time for connections.
- Visas. British passport holders need an Indian e-Visa or an OCI card. Check the official Indian visa website.
