Flying with children: what to check
- Baggage depends on the fare. Two people on the same flight can have different allowances. Check the checked-bag allowance on your fare before you book, especially on cheaper "light" or low-cost fares.
- Babies under 2 usually travel on your lap with an infant ticket, often around 10% of the adult fare plus taxes. Ask the airline for a bassinet (baby cot) seat as early as you can; there are only a few on each plane.
- Sit together. On some fares, choosing seats costs extra. Check in online as soon as it opens if you haven't paid for seats.
- Arrive early. Allow about 3 hours at Heathrow for a long-haul flight with children and bags.
- Visas and passports. Most British passport holders need an Indian visa (many families use the official e-Visa) or an OCI card. Check the rules on the official Indian visa website and the GOV.UK India travel advice before you book.
- Night flights. Evening departures from London land in Mumbai the next morning, so children can sleep through most of the flight.
